Guantanamo's last Western detainee returned to Canada

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - The youngest prisoner and last Westerner held in the Guantanamo military base, Omar Khadr, was sent to finish his sentence in his native Canada on Saturday, the Canadian government said.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said that Khadr, who was a 15-year-old fighting in Afghanistan when captured in 2002, had been flown from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to a military base in Trenton, Ontario and transferred to the province's Millhaven maximum-security prison.

Khadr's case has been controversial both in Canada and abroad given his age when he was captured, the nature of his detention and hearing, and the reluctance of Canadian officials to accept his return.

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," Toews said in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A U.S. war crimes tribunal in 2010 sentenced Khadr, now 26, to 40 years in prison, although he was expected to serve just a few more years under a deal that included his admission he was an al Qaeda conspirator who murdered a U.S. soldier.

Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to charges that included murdering American Army medic Christopher Speer with a grenade in a 2002 firefight, conspiring with al Qaeda to commit terrorist acts, making roadside bombs to target U.S. troops in Afghanistan, spying on American military convoys and providing material support for terrorism.

Khadr was the first person since World War Two to be prosecuted in a war crimes tribunal for acts committed as a juvenile. He was the youngest prisoner still at Guantanamo, but younger boys were previously held there.

Canadian-born Khadr was taken to Afghanistan by his father, a senior al Qaeda member who apprenticed the boy to a group of bomb makers who opened fire when U.S. troops came to their compound. Khadr was captured in the firefight, during which he was blinded in one eye and shot twice in the back.

HAPPY TO BE HOME

"He's finding it hard to believe that this has finally happened," said John Norris, one of Khadr's lawyers, according to a Canadian Press report. "His spirits are good. He is very, very happy to be home."

In a written statement, Toews said Canada received Khadr's application for transfer from the United States on April 13, 2012. He said U.S. officials assured Canada it would receive a videotape copy of an interview with Khadr, but it, along with other videotapes of interviews and unedited reports, was not sent until this month.

Former Canadian ambassador Gar Pardy, however, said Canada's Conservative government, which cultivates an image of being tough on crime, dragged out the transfer.

"I think the government was mainly very mean-spirited in how it handled the case," Pardy said to CTV News.

The Canadian Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that Canada breached Khadr's rights by sending intelligence agents to interrogate him in Guantanamo Bay in 2003 and 2004 and sharing the results with the United States. Khadr's continuing detention meant his rights were still being infringed, the judges ruled. The top court also said that Canada was not obliged to repatriate him, however.

Toews said he remains concerned that Khadr "idealizes" his father and denies Ahmed Khadr's association with al Qaeda. The Canadian public safety minister said he is also troubled by how "radicalized" Khadr has become from his time in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Guantanamo Bay.

The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that it transferred Khadr to Canada, leaving 166 detainees at Guantanamo.

In the 2008 presidential election campaign, President Barack Obama promised to close the Guantanamo prison during his term, but that pledge has gone unfulfilled amid security concerns among Americans and opposition from Congress, which enacted laws making it more difficult to transfer prisoners from Guantanamo.

The transfer represents progress, but the Guantanamo prison should close immediately, said Suzanne Nossel, Amnesty International USA's executive director.

Canadian authorities should also investigate Khadr's allegations of torture while in the prison, she said.

"Canada now has the chance to right some of these wrongs."

Khadr's sentence will expire on October 30, 2018.

State Rep. questions former UC president's compensation

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)- State Rep. Connie Pillich sent a letter this week to the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees asking for further explanation of former President Greg Williams' compensation.

The board decided to reward Williams with $1.3 million over the next two years ?after he abruptly resigned six days before classes began this fall.

"I am hopeful that the Board can provide a more thoughtful and thorough account for former President Williams' pay and his current consulting position with the university," said Rep. Pillich. "It just doesn't seem right that Mr. Williams can collect a salary for a faculty position when he won't be teaching, free campus housing and a generous bonus in light of the circumstances. I think it sends the wrong message to taxpayers and students struggling with the rising costs of higher education. It is also very concerning that they won't be keeping any record of Mr. Williams' "consulting" work going forward. Students, families and faculty deserve some level of accountability when so much public money is at stake."

Williams will receive a retroactive bonus of $112,750 for last year's service, $255,000 for a faculty position with the UC law school, free university housing and a consulting deal worth $500,000 over the next two years.

Health care is entering a second curve, panelists say

Share this story:

The health care industry is in a transition phase, moving from simply caring for people when they?re sick to keeping them well.

A panel of local and state health care experts at the Southern Colorado Economic Forum this morning said the industry was entering what it calls ?curve two,? a different way to deliver care.

?It?s the way health care has to go,? said Rulon Stacey, president of the University of Colorado Health and CEO at Poudre Valley Health System, new partners for Memorial Health System. ?We?re moving toward lower costs, driving variation out by focusing on best practices and sharing data.?

New reimbursement pilots mean that doctors and hospitals will need to collaborate to keep patients well, and will get rewarded for doing so. It?s a move away from fee-for-service, which Penrose-St. Francis Health Services CEO Margaret Sabin said was a good thing.

She pointed to an experiment at Penrose, which self-funds its own insurance plan. The hospital spent a little more on premiums, and started a wellness component.? Claims fell from the hospital?s 2,800 staff members.

?Here?s the real story,? she said. ?Short term disability costs were down 26 percent. Workers? compensation claims were down, and productivity was up. We saved $1.6 million.?

But health care is also about creating a culture, and Army Col. John McGrath, ?head of the Evans Army Medical Center at Fort Carson. He said military health care was also taking on a wellness approach.

The Army has started medical homes, with patients seeing the same doctor every time. They?ve also opened clinics in the community to ease overcrowding and care access for civilian providers. And they?re working on clinics for chronic disease management that also include fitness components, he said.

?I know people don?t think the Army cares about costs,? he said. ?But we do. We?re as concerned about it as anyone.?

The new direction could mean more money and economic development opportunities, said Charlie Sweet, executive director of strategic planning and initiatives at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

That?s because the Memorial Health System ? UCH lease agreement not only includes a branch medical campus at UCCS, it also includes a component to enhance opportunities for clinical research at the University.

?We?re not a research university, but we do have research going on at UCCS,? he said. ?And now the relationship gives us the ability to engage and grow that research. It will give us access to patients and allow people here to apply to research programs.?

The branch medical campus has been on UCCS?s wish list for years ? and will be a reality in a matter of just a few years. The campus needs approval from the Joint Commission first.

But once it gets started, 24 third- and fourth-year students will be going to clinical rounds in Colorado Springs and the surrounding community,

?We?ll even have students as far away as Pueblo,?? he said. ?We?ll have administrative offices and classes at the Lane Center for Health, but the students will be out in the community.?

The goal, the panel said, is to turn health care into an exported product.

?If you can bring people in from outside the community, then you?re exporting health care the same way you export a widget,? said Stacey. ?And it becomes an economic driver. In Fort Collins, Poudre Valley gets about 40 percent of its patients from outside the region. Memorial gets 18 percent. There?s growth there.?

And there?s room for friendly competition too.

?When Memorial gets stronger, the community gets stronger,? Sabin said. ?One of the things that has concerned me is people leaving the city to get health care somewhere else. If we have two strong hospitals in the community, two options, then we can get people to buy local. And that will equate to stronger economy in the city.?

High School Basketball Power Forward

Now we're starting to move to the center of the High School basketball court. We've left the guards in their outer orbit as they dribble, drive, and shoot with skill. We've also added considerable heft to the small forward and brought the position in tighter to the basketball with more back to the basket skills. Let's take a look at what makes for a good power forward at the high school basketball level. Just a hint...it's power.

It's almost unfair. The other team doesn't really know what to do. Your point guard keeps bringing the ball down and after some baseline picks and a quick shuffle, the power forward on your team jockeying for position just outside the block. He's way too deep for good measure and the adjoining defensive player didn't rotate over quick enough to cut off the pass. In drops the pass to the power forward who seizes it with both hands and looks over his shoulder to see what his next step is going to be. He kicks the ball back out to the shooting guard and wrestles another foot or two further into the defensive player's space. Back in comes the pass to you but now you're deep in enemy territory. You flex back to clear some room and the defensive player gets knocked back despite his best efforts. You dribble hard as you pivot left and right looking for a weakness...a feeling of give on the other players body. You sense he's off balance a bit and you see the other defensive player coming in to double. It's now or never...you clear more space with your left hip, drive your shoulder into the chest of the defensive player without overdoing it and find your self with a foot of space. That's all you need. You go up strong and bring the ball out and over against the backboard. It drops in as the defender reels from the chest punch he just took. It's going to be a long night.

The power forward or #4 is almost self-explanatory. Height is generally a concern with the power forward but less though than with the center since some people just play bigger than they are. Think Charles Barkley. At the high school basketball level, some players are just really strong regardless of height and they combine this with a tenacity and toughness that makes for a good power forward. It's the linebacker of the high school basketball scene. They earn their keep around the paint with moves to the back, short drives to the hoop, the occasional short shot and lots of rebounds. A good power forward finds himself at the line quite a bit so a good foul shot percentage can quickly add points to the total and also thin out the defensive players or at least take the fight out of them as they get into foul trouble. The power forward works well with the center which makes sense since they occupy the same general territory. Back picks and communication between two bigs can be extremely effective at the high school level.

The power forward position can be difficult to place well since you typically have lots of dribblers and shooters but a person with solid footwork in post position is rarer. These skills tend to come with time and there's not always enough time by high school to perfect an inside game beyond maybe a turn around jumper. With time, a power forward can develop drop steps, up and unders, and a whole selection of pre-defined moves to either get his shot or get fouled. The power forward also does a great deal of one on one play in isolation against a defender. That isn't to say that plays aren't designed around the power forward but the benefit of a good player in this position is the ability to just drop the ball down into them and have them go to work. If they're crafty, strong, and aggressive, a high school basketball power forward can do some real damage.

Feature: Lessons From a Gaming Expo - Nintendo Life

A rite of passage

For many gamers, this hobby of ours is about more than just buying and playing games, but also about hitting up expos, which are havens of gaming and related shenanigans. We?ve spent the past few days soaking up the sights and sounds at the Eurogamer Expo in London, and we?ve had some important gaming life lessons reaffirmed in the process.

If you hype it, they will come

Apparently ZombiU is here

Apparently ZombiU is here

Nintendo secured a good spot at the Eurogamer Expo with the Wii U section ? though some 3DS demos were thrown in ? being one of the first that attendees see. What?s most fascinating is that ZombiU has its own separate queue, with those eager zombie victims waiting up to two hours to play one game, when the Wii U area as a whole has various titles on offer. Even better, this title?s queue is often longer than the Wii U equivalent, showing that it?s dominating gamer?s attentions and, maybe affections.

We shouldn?t be surprised, as Nintendo of Europe has gone to great lengths to hype the title as a must-have Wii U exclusive. We even have the ZombiU console bundle, which doesn?t include Nintendo Land but comes with a Pro Controller as an extra incentive. The demo area itself is bigger than any other Nintendo title on show, even New Super Mario Bros. U. Most expo fans will be trying it out for the first time, but lots of coverage and the coveted ?18? rating mean that it gets top billing.

Still, Wii U has been quite well hyped overall, featuring as one of the most popular attractions on show. Does hype equal brilliance? Not long until we find out.

People wear the strangest things

Mike's caught one

Mike's caught one

Ah, cosplay. We all have heroes, some of whom exist as pixels or polygons, and dressing up as them is the greatest complement we can pay ? apart from filling their owner?s wallets by buying the games, of course. There are official mascots of course, including the Super ?God they?re tall? Mario Bros. pictured in our photos from the Eurogamer Expo show floor, but they don?t count because they?re being paid to dress up and amuse us all. Real cosplay is reserved for the unpaid enthusiasts, who often make their own outfits, with mixed results.

Some outfits are rather good, making the distinction between paid-up pros and good cosplayers tricky, with mini-celebrities forming in the process. One dressed as Lara Croft, for example, drew quite a crowd keen to take pictures, but we weren?t sure if she was linked to the publisher or game. We also met a walking Pikachu, who ironically informed us that she was, exclusively, an Xbox gamer; like we said, people wear the strangest things.

Ultimately cosplay is all about being a big fan and, maybe, a bit of a show-off. The Nintendo Life staff have debated whether a full pre-prepared outfit for hire counts, but let's keep things simple and say they are cosplay. It?s such a phenomenon that YouTube videos go viral, and expos often have photo-booths where attendees can pose and get a memento in front of an official background. If you decide to go cosplay, make sure you go all the way, like the pictured Pidgeot posing with our very own Mike Mason.

If you need StreetPass puzzle pieces, look no further

Get your hits here

Get your hits here

At the Eurogamer Expo there?s a rather nice area with big comfy seats, rather conveniently called the ?Nintendo Life StreetPass Zone?. While it may be tricky to pick up many StreetPass hits where you live, wherever you are, events like these are a bonanza of hits, cool Mii characters and funky hats. For some of us desperate for pink puzzle pieces, it?s been a revelation.

If you can bear the thought of repeatedly clearing out hits from the StreetPass plaza, ten at a time of course, you?ll quite possible turn your woefully empty puzzle panels into cool 3D dioramas. Wherever these magical expo gamers got all of their pink puzzle pieces ? maybe at yet another event ? you may as well grab them while you can. In our experience it?s possible to pick up over 100 Mii chums, easily more, and it becomes an obsessive mini-game in its own right.

Pro tip for this: don?t forget to hold the R button to speed up the animations. If you don?t, then it?ll take you a long time to populate the plaza.

Those are three things that are inevitable at any gaming expo, and an experience for those trying one out for the first time. If you?ve been to gaming or technology events, tell us all about it in the comments below.

Builders put home buyers into credit boot camp | Mortgages & Real ...

In the United States? post-housing crash world, Kelly and Jeff Clark are the kind of people who are not supposed to be able to buy.

For a down payment, they had nothing. Their credit scores were sub-par. But this Christmas, the Clarks will move from their rundown rental into a brand new, four-bedroom home in an amenity-loaded development outside of Lakeland, Fla. All without paying a dime.

They are part of a new rehab program being offered by some U.S. home builders, doling out sophisticated financial advice to prospective buyers who would not normally qualify for loans.

Just five years after the biggest housing meltdown in generations, some consumer experts are wondering if builders are up to their old tricks again.

?You have people applying for loans that there?s no way they can pay, but it doesn?t matter because the ability to repay isn?t the basis of the loan. It?s the ability to pass underwriting so the loan can be sold,? says Washington, D.C.-based bankruptcy attorney Brett Weiss.

The financial advisors go by names such as ?mortgage advisors,? ?credit advocates? or ?loan officers.? They help prospective customers create budgets and slash spending. Some also help out with ?credit repair,? the practice of analyzing credit reports to determine the best strategies for raising scores as quickly as possible.

The Clarks thought they would remain renters forever. But early in the summer, a friend recommended they meet Janet Backman, a sales agent for Southern Homes.

During that first meeting, Ms. Backman pored over the Clarks? financials and decided to put them in what she calls her ?incubator.?

That?s the process Ms. Backman uses to convert the credit-challenged into homebuyers within a matter of months. It drives her crazy that people in her area pay more to rent than to own, with monthly mortgage costs now lower than rent in nearly every major U.S. metro area.

The Clarks had no credit cards and paid for everything with cash. So as Ms. Backman talked with them that first day, she simultaneously signed them up for credit cards online.

Then she told the couple that, if they made US$50 worth of purchases each month, but only paid the balance down to US$25, their credit scores would likely rise immediately.

Within a month, she got the couple?s scores up enough to qualify for the zero-down, government-backed loan she secured for them through a partner lender.

Southern Home?s sales agents have sold 162 homes so far this year, with nearly all buyers getting similar advice and loan terms.

Says Backman: ?Every time I hear about how hard it is to purchase a home, I?m thinking, what planet are they living on??

These fiscal rehabs are one reason many builders are boosting sales, even though most loans that banks are underwriting now meet stringent government standards.

PulteGroup Inc. said in July that its financial program could help its sales for some time. On Monday, Lennar Corp. said revenue from home sales rose 33% last quarter from the same quarter a year earlier. Orders for homes rose 44%, helped by the 25% increase in membership in its Homebuyers Club since last year.

Providing financial therapy solves a huge problem for the builders: How to sell to first-time home buyers when so many younger consumers are saddled with student debt and bad credit.

The number of people aged 25-to-34 who bought homes in 2011 fell to 27%, the lowest share in the past decade, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Rising student debt has played at least some role in that decline, analysts said. According to the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, about 50% of young people that started college in 2003 were paying more than 10% of their income on student debt.

MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | Moving Up: 5 ...

moving boxes

Whether you?re beginning your post-graduation career, received a cross-country job offer you can?t refuse, or are longing for a change of scenery, moving is an exciting, stressful, and budget-straining time.

This is especially true if your new locale is considerably more expensive than your current one.

Here are five steps you must take to preserve your finances before packing up for an expensive city.

Pull your credit report.

Home inventory in popular markets comes at a premium and can take time (and in some cases, a realtor) to find.

Before you start home or apartment shopping, financial advisor Xavier Epps of XNE Financial Advising, LLC says you must know your credit score?even if you?ve saved more than enough funds to move.

If your credit score isn?t strong (700 or above is generally considered a healthy score), this could hinder your ability to meet a landlord?s credit requirements for new tenants.

If you?ve got collection activity on your credit report, Epps suggests trying to settle and close unresolved issues at least two months in advance of completing a landlord?s credit application or applying for a home loan.

?In doing so, your credit score will feel some relief and move upward slightly, putting you in a better position to find a place to live.?

Know before you negotiate.

The cost of living in your new city may be double that of your current home?but that doesn?t mean your salary will get the same boost.

Epps suggests researching median incomes for your industry in your city of choice to establish a benchmark for salary norms before you discuss the topic with a potential employer.

If you?re moving before you find a job, he says to save at least five to ten percent of that median income before you move.

Consider your priorities.

?Expensive? is a relative term based on your experience.

For example, if you?re moving from Manhattan to San Francisco you won?t feel the same financial impact as a person moving from Atlanta will.

In fact, despite the fact that San Francisco is ranked as the fourth most expensive city in the country according to an index published by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), Manhattan-ites may actually save money making this move.

The index indicates that Manhattan is the priciest city in the country. Research cost of living calculators at reputable sites (Bankrate.com has a good one)?but also consider what those costs are based on, and which of them you can control.

For example, though real estate in Manhattan is notoriously expensive, the C2ER index shows that transportation and health care actually costs more in San Francisco.

While you must be realistic about what you can afford for basic needs, cost alone shouldn?t deter you from pursuing the life you want?provided you?re willing to make some concessions to make your residential dreams a reality.

If owning a home is a ?must? for example, moving to a city where you?ll always be priced out of the market doesn?t make financial sense.

But, if your primary goal is simply to live near a beach, and you?re willing to live with a roommate, use public transportation, and cut back on unnecessary spending, the move may not be out of reach.

Weigh the value of alternatives.

Bryan Robertson, a real estate broker of Sereno Group Real Estate who works in Silicon Valley, advises considering neighboring areas that are close the prime area you?d like to live in, but may cost a bit less.

He also suggests veering away from living in top school markets, explaining that homes in such neighborhoods will always cost more than comparable ones in nice neighborhoods with less celebrated school systems.

Ultimately, sending your children to private school may actually cost less than the price differential.

He also suggests considering the cost of commute time, and fuel, before committing to one area.

You may get more house for your buck when you live further from a metropolitan area, for example, but if that means doubling your commute to work, it may not be worth the overall cost savings.

Most importantly, keep an open mind and be prepared to make some adjustments. ?Focus on what your budget will allow in a new location, versus comparing what you had in your less expensive town,? says Robertson.

Save your receipts.

Remember that moving expenses are tax deductible, if you meet Internal Revenue Service criteria.

If you are moving to a new city for a job and paying for it out of your own pocket, you can deduct ?reasonable moving expenses? (not meals) as an adjustment to your income when you file yearly taxes.

Keep in mind that you move at least 50 miles away from your old home and old job location, and work full-time for at least 39 weeks during the first 12 months immediately following the move to qualify for the deduction.

15 Awesome Uses For Olive Oil | Food-Shui | The Tao of Dana

Olive oil comes in many grades and colors, yet no matter which you choose you have a fabulously versatile home, beauty & wellness tool?as well as deliciousness?for cooking! Here is a round up of ways that I have used olive oil, and a few I am eager to try!

?Olive Oil Goodness

1.For your diet: Extra virgin olive oil ? and most olive oils in fact, are packed with monounsaturated fatty acids that promote the good cholesterol and keep the bad cholesterol at bay.? That said, do not heat up extra virgin olive oil; more refined olive oils are fine for cooking, but the darker green, more olive-esque oils are meant to be eaten unheated.

2.For your healthy heart: The FDA even recommends (I say even because, lets face it, they are way behind the times) drinking 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day.? In lieu of ?drinking? it, try two tablespoons on a salad, on your bread if you eat it.

3.For Oil-Pulling: We?ve talked before about the oil-swishing in your mouth for 15-20 minutes first thing in the morning to improve your gum health as well as detoxify your body.? This oil pulling lends itself to oils like olive oil, and the olive oil is easy on your palette.? More on oil pulling right HERE if you are interested!

4.For a fabulous body scrub: My favorite scrub is brown sugar mixed with enough olive oil and honey in roughly even parts to make a great scrub consistency.? You can also mix even parts sea salt and olive oil to make a quick scrub if sweet is not your thing!

5.For your silkening bath: A splash of olive oil in your bath is an ultimate moisture soak.? As with using an oil in the tub (or in a scrub in your shower) remember to clean the tub well afterward so that it doesn?t become a major hazard next time you step in!

6.For your skin: Olive oil right after a shower or bath on damp skin is a luxurious treatment that is?easily absorbed into your skin?and is?very therapeutic in the process.

7.For your smooth shave: On that note, you can use olive oil in place of shave gel, just don?t pile it on or your razor will not take kindly to this oil infusion!

8.For deep cleaning your face: I have done this from time to time when I really need to clear out my pores, and its genius!? Basically, massage your skin with a few teaspoons of olive oil for 30 seconds or so, then run a washcloth in hot water (but not burning, scalding hot!), wring it out and place it over your face to ?steam? your pores.? Repeat the wet towel/wring and steam a few times and then just blot your face and let dry at the end.? You can rinse if you?d like, but the oil and steam pretty well cleans out your skin. I don?t do this more than once a week, sometimes twice a month or so!

9.For hair shine & frizz taming: To treat frizzy hair, rub the slightest bit of olive oil? between your palms and smooth onto your hair to create a polished finish.? Tread lightly here- there us a fine line between shining tresses?and greasy messes!

10.For a great hair masque: That said, I love honey for hair treatments as well as olive oil.? Equal parts honey and olive oil, a few teaspoons a piece, creates a great hair masque for damp hair.? I like to rinse this out and follow with a rinse of one part apple cider vinegar to about 10 parts water.? Divine!

11.For makeup remover that kicks butt: Olive oil on a cotton ball or pad= makeup remover brilliance, especially mascara!

12.For your manicure: Rub a few drops of olive oil on your cuticles to keep them smooth and moist!

13.For squeaky drawers, doors and bikes: All those reasons you reach for WD-40 to oil household squeaks can be replaced with all the reasons to reach for olive oil to do the same!

?14. For your shoes & leather to shine: While I always patch test leather before putting anything on it (you never know how it will react!) I have had great success with olive oil to shine especially my vintage shoes!

15.?For polishing your silverware: This is a big trick for me, because if you let silverware air dry, it becomes a spotty mess.? A small bit of olive oil on a cloth and you can shine that silverware to perfection!

Boardgames & Baking: A new game: Village

Last week I decided to act on an impulse and buy a new boardgame. I checked a list of nicely rated new-ish games and compared it to the offers of several e-shops that have their stone branches here in Prague.

Village or Kronika Panstv? (The Chronicle of a Domain as it could be translated) is German this year's Game of the Year. It looks like a standard ?worker placement game but in fact it is not.

Each player has a family and each round chooses what actions to take from a selection of places around the eponymous village. Some actions need a member put on them, some don't. Players collect little cubes standing for different kinds of influence that need to be spent for performing certain actions. Most of the actions need also "time" spent on them which eventually makes one of the family members die of old age.

Ultimately, each player strives to make their family be remembered the most - place their deceased members in the village's chronicle and the younger ones to attain importance for the village in a church (as monks) or a town hall (as local politicians or something).

I've played it once so far. I will write a proper post once I get to enjoy it more.

1 Surefire Trick to Understand Your Wife Better | Some Wise Guy

brickwallHave you ever gotten in trouble for saying something stupid? Yeah, me neither. (Why did my nose suddenly grow a foot?)

Generally speaking, men are not as in tune with our emotions as our wives and we don?t understand the impact of our words.

One root cause of marital conflict I?ve noticed is a lack of perspective. Husbands and wives (like all human beings) see situations and their relationship from their unique point of view.

A husband who is the primary bread-winner may come home after a long day at the office and (foolishly) ask his wife, ?What did you do all day??

NOTE: The man in this situation may genuinely be asking his wife how her day was and just chose his words poorly.

My wife is a teacher, but during the summer (and while she is on maternity leave) there is a tendency for me to place greater value on what I accomplished during the day versus the role she plays as a seasonal stay-at-home-mom.

Here is a hypothetical conversation:

Me: Hey Babe, how was your day?
LK: Okay, I took the kids to school, vacuumed and went to the post office.
Me: That?s it? I sent 150 emails, attended 2 hours of meetings and?a conference call with London.
LK: ? <insert ?the look?>

On the surface it may seem like my day was more productive. How wrong an assessment that would be.

This last week I had the privilege to stay home from work to spend time with our new baby girl and help LK with household stuff during her recovery.?It gave me such an appreciation for what she does on a daily basis I will never compare our ?productivity? again.

Time does not pass at the same pace at home as it does at the office. Getting the kids up, dressed, fed and out the door in time to catch the bus to school is not as easy as I thought. Especially considering I have to be up, dressed and fed as well.

Running errands to the bank, grocery store and post office takes way more time than it should.?The benefit I have at work is all my to-do items happen in the same geographic location. Stay-at-home parents have to factor in driving, waiting in lines and queueing up at the bus stop.

I was under the (naive) impression that I would have all sorts of time last week for reading, writing and naps. That didn?t happen once. Not a single day did I fail to look at the clock and realize ?Whoa! It?s already time to go pick up the kids from school.?

As a husband (or wife) the difference between good and great may be a little perspective. Walk a mile (or a week) in your spouse?s shoes before risking strife or a night sleeping on the couch.

Question: How do you maintain perspective in your relationships? Have you ever asked the wrong question?

Sabotage sees Real Madrid game postponed

Madrid, Sep 24

A Spanish football La Liga match between Rayo Vallecano and Real Madrid had to be postponed after someone sabotaged the electric cables in Rayo's Vallecas stadium.

The Sunday match will now be played Monday night after suspected Rayo supporters, angry at being forced by the club to pay extra money on top of their season ticket price, carried out the act, reports Xinhua.

Both sides wanted to play the match despite the pitch being lit by just three lights in the main stands. But security forces refused to allow fans into the match alleging the lack of light presented a threat.

Cristiana Cifuentes, the security delegate of the Madrid Regional Authority, set a cut off time of 10 p.m. for the sabotaged cables to be repaired. When that did not happen, referee Fernandez Borbalan had to postpone the match.

Redbox app for Android updated with a new UI and better filtering, no Instant streaming yet

Redbox app for Android update brings a new UI and better filtering, no Instant streaming yet

The official Redbox app for Android hasn't seen many changes since it was first introduced early last year, but that's changing with version 3.0. Now available in Google Play, it brings a new look that should make browsing a bit easier, plus enhanced filtering (you can sort Blu-ray discs by genre) and the ability to sort by date or alphabetical order. Finally, support for push notifications could mean unsubscribing to those weekly texts for coupon codes, and users report you can now input the coupon codes in the app while making reservations. We poked around but couldn't find any references to its Instant streaming service, so there's at least one thing to expect for the next update. Android powered kiosk renters can grab the app at the source link below.

The WBT Pre-Game Show ? 4488: A Ridge Blog

WBT!

No, not a Women?s Badminton Tournament.

Nor the World?s Best Tetherballers.

Rather, it?s the Wine Bloggers Tasting, and this is the Pre-Game Show!

I?m your host, and I?d like to introduce the players who?ll be taking the field for this very special event.

But before we begin, a bit of context:

This tasting series debuted back in March of 2010, and?while?we?ve certainly played host to?a veritable who?s who of Wine Bloggers, it hasn?t only been Wine Bloggers we?ve hosted. We?ve had food bloggers, culture bloggers, music bloggers, drinks bloggers, and more.

And, while there have certainly been a great many welcomed and returning faces, we?ve also had a great time?debuting new participants as well.

The new edition of our WBT, set for tomorrow afternoon at 1pm, is no exception; in fact, we?ve got on tap one of the more diversely exciting?assemblages we?ve yet set glassware for.

Behold! (In no particular order ?)

First up, Jeska?& Brad Kittenbrink, better known as ?Geeks With Drinks!? Lovers of Gourmet Food Trucks, brewers of beer, and stealers of cocktail cherries, these San Francisco-based bloggers are debuting at our series tomorrow, and we?re really looking forward to meeting and tasting with them! To get the flavor of their flavor, please give a read to the following:

http://geekswithdrinks.com/?p=71

Next, the Rad Man himself, one of the hecka best wine bloggers going, and possibly the only other wine blogger out there besides yours truly who comes in fairly high in the Google queue if you search for ?The Never-Ending Story!? Of course I?m speaking of Jeff Solomon, esteemed author of the Stay Rad wine blog. You can read a fantastic sample here:

http://stayradwineblog.com/2011/07/28/this-changes-everything/

Our next blogger is ? well ? Jen. And I?d tell you more about her, but I?m still trying to ?Chase? her down! Meaning, of course, we?re speaking of Jen Massey, author of the blog ?Chasing Jen!? Jen is debuting at our series as well, and we can?t wait to host her! You can read an example of her fine work here:

http://chasingjen.com/2012/01/23/wine-fried-chick-legs-and-rain-pure-comfort/

Next up, Fred Swan, he of the NorCal Wine Blog, an indisputable Gold Standard for Wine Blogging in ours, this Golden State. Selfishly, I?m going to recommend a post of his in which he wrote about?our?tasting series; though not because of that, per se, but rather, because he referred to me as the ?Instigator-In-Chief,? and I think that?s quite groovy. You can read his work here:

http://norcalwine.com/blog/51-general-interest/684-on-wine-jazz-and-inkblots?q=ridge

And for our next participant, may I present Erin Grant, a wine blogger with a mission, currently tasting her way through an entire planet?s worth of wine varietals. To read a sample of her fine writing on the blog ?Give Me Grapes? please click below:

http://www.givemegrapes.com/2012/05/gold-country-wine.html

And here?s another debut for you; in fact, it?s a double-debut! Mark & Tristan, who write, amongst them, three blogs! Dig these:

http://www.winelog.net/blogs/markur/

http://positivepalate.com/

http://hahnwinery.com/blog/hahn-harvest-2012-begins-today

(Yes, that?s the Hahn Winery blog there in the #3 spot; Mark writes that one! Quite cool ?)

And now, I must say, there are few things that I find more emotionally and morally satisfying than an East Coaster happily transplanting to the west; it?s clear affirmation of what I truly believe; that Northern California is indeed The Promised Land. Melanie Friedman is just such an ex-pat, and she brings vital real-life winemaking experience to her blog endeavors; case in point the following post on her blog ?Wine Maven In Training?, entitled ?Gravity Flow Winemaking at Vineyard 29?:

http://iheartnywines.blogspot.com/2012/02/gravity-flow-winemaking.html

And then there?s my man Ed Thralls. You?ve recently seen him name-checked here on this blog, because we co-hosted ? with the subversive, soulful and wise Sasha Kadey ? a panel at this year?s Wine Blogger?s Conference (which you can read about on the fantastic Luscious Lushes Wine Blog; sadly, Thea won?t be in attendance at our tasting tomorrow, but you can dig her spirit as she writes about our panel; just click here.). Ed gets it every which way, and there ain?t no one I respect more; check the sample:

http://www.winetonite.com/2010/08/07/in-search-of-soul-and-grapes/

Rachel Voorhees?has been known to taste a wine or two in the company of the above-noted Thea, but mark my words, she is a publishing powerhouse in her own right, and an enviable fount of oeno-energy; check out a sample of her great work below:

http://rachelvoorhees.com/2012/09/drunken-fruit-salsa/

Yet another debut at our Wine Bloggers Tasting Series will be the writer behind VineBuzz, Rich Reader, who I am already quite fond of because he uses words like ?genotype? when talking wine blogs, and who writes the following from the 2011 iteration of the Wine Bloggers Conference:

http://vinebuzz.biz/node/106

A rather newer member of the Wine Bloggers Tasting family is the writer behind FoodPorn.com, which is, for my money, one of the most brilliantly executed, fully-fleshed?out, conceptually-driven blogs out there; this blog doesn?t miss a thematic trick, and it?s well worth a read. Here?s a great sample:

http://foodporn.com/1pescygourmet/2012/04/pebble-beach-food-and-wine-not-a-bad-sunday.html

Perhaps inevitably enough, FoodPorn.com will be in the company of WineA&*^#le.com, which, despite the sardonicisms?inherent to the name, actually provides some cracklingly intelligent?perspective on our industry. Dig a bit of the vibe here:

http://wineasshole.com/2010/03/03/cakebread-and-the-cuvee-de-fail-rubaiyat/

And that, is our team, and they?ll be taking the field at 1pm PST tomorrow!

If you wish to follow along with the tasting, just tune in with your favorite twitter-filter, and watch out for the #RidgeVineyards hashtag!

'Meteors' seen across UK skies

People across the country report their sightings

People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the night sky, thought to be meteors or "space junk"

Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east.

The lights were seen as far north as Caithness in Scotland as well as in Wales and Norfolk in East Anglia.

Experts said the sightings could be satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

The lights have also been reported in the Midlands, parts of north-east England and in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Brian Guthrie in Grangemouth near Edinburgh, who watched the objects pass through the sky, said it appeared to be something "pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere".

"I've seen shooting stars and meteor showers before, but this was much larger and much more colourful."

Coastguards in the Shetland Islands received what they believe is Scotland's most northerly sighting of the meteor at 23:00 BST.

They were called by a member of the public who had seen a bright white light in the sky over the Stacks of Duncansby in Caithness.

'Yellow and orange ball'

One person who contacted the BBC said it was "kind of a mass of light, gold light. Everything moving in unison".

"It wasn't diverging... I thought it was a plane at first. It was quite low on the horizon and moving much slower than I'd expect to see a shooting star, but it was amazing."

Another said the sight was "like Independence Day" - a reference to the film about an alien invasion of Earth.

Diane Martin from Rainworth in Nottinghamshire said she saw "a bright yellow and orange ball" and considered calling the police before her husband checked the internet and found other people had seen it.

She told the BBC: "We only saw the one. It was quite low as well. It wasn't that far away to be honest. We thought something was actually going to come down in the actual village.

"It was travelling from east to west. It was coming down but it was going across more than it was going down."

Durham Constabulary said they were "inundated" with calls from members of the public across the north-east who were "concerned" as to the sightings of unidentified flying objects lighting up the night sky.

In Wales, sightings were reported between Cardiff and Swansea in the south, Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and Criccieth in Gwynedd.

Howard Parry spotted a "stream of light" while looking out to sea from his caravan in Llanrhystud in Ceredigion at around 23:00 BST.

"I thought first of all it was a plane going down then I thought what the devil is it?

Many of the eyewitness accounts suggest this spectacle was the result of old space hardware falling back to Earth.

Classic meteors - fragments of rock - tend to flash across the sky in an instant.

An incoming satellite on the other hand, can take longer to blaze overhead, giving many more people the chance to notice it.

There is now a wild jungle of redundant hardware up there - everything from old rocket stages that continue to loop around the Earth decades after they were launched, to flecks of paint that have lifted off once shiny space vehicles and floated off into the distance.

Gravity demands it all comes back to Earth at some point.

The bigger the returning object, the bigger the light show.

"The best way I can explain it is that it looked like a train with all different carriages on it... it lasted about 25 to 30 seconds.

"I've never seen anything like it - it was really, really bright," he said.

Chris Butler, of Tonypandy in the Rhondda, said he saw "a triangle of orange lights" that "didn't look like a typical meteorite".

'Space debris'

He added: "It looked similar to aeroplane lights but it looked really huge so it obviously wasn't a plane or anything."

Dr Tim O'Brien, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, told the BBC it was difficult to know the cause of the phenomenon.

"It's hard to say exactly, whether it was a chunk of rock coming in from outer space, burning up in the atmosphere, or a bit of space debris we call it, space junk, which is basically man-made stuff from a spacecraft that's burning up in the atmosphere.

"[The object was] probably 80 miles up or so, high up, moving very fast, actually, 18,000 miles an hour, probably, at least."

Colin Johnston, from Armagh Planetarium in Northern Ireland, said the lights were unlikely to be part of a meteor shower.

"There are actually several small, faint, meteor showers scheduled across September but they're so unspectacular, not many people actually bother looking for them.

"I think that actually this spectacle tonight might not be associated with that."

"I think it's something just by chance has happened to come in tonight, some piece of actual space junk floating around the universe for billions of years has just picked tonight to fall in across our skies, or a satellite that's been up for some years has decided to burn up," he said.

What does it mean to be a BBR retirement home? What?s involved? We are just looking for a family with a ton of love to give. A family who realizes that this super sweet senior boy still has so much love and goodness to share. You share the love; we pick up his medical bills. Yup! Bonnie Blue Rescue will cover Snoops? medical bills for the remainder of his life if he is in a BBR Retirement Home. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to open their hearts and homes to our old man?

Obama 'redistribution' audio clip truncated by GOP?

The 14-year-old audio clip circulated by the Mitt Romney campaign this week to attack Barack Obama as favoring "redistribution" of wealth was "deceptively edited," Democrats say, leaving out important context that Obama provided in his next breath.

In the clip Republicans are pushing around - and Romney now cites on the stump - then Illinois State Sen. Obama is heard speaking at a university conference in October 1998, appearing to endorse "redistribution" of wealth.

"I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure that everybody's got a shot," Obama is heard saying on the clip, which then abruptly ends.

In the full recording, obtained by NBC News, Obama continues to explain in the next sentence that he is speaking broadly about making city and state government more efficient in their use of resources - and endorses "competition" in the "marketplace."

"How do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at the local level and can be tailored to particular communities," he says.

The edit of the last line out of the clip earned Romney and the Republican National Committee a "four pinocchios" rating by fact checkers at the Washington Post.

When asked about the newly revealed context, RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski insisted that Obama's comments still reflected a commitment to fostering government dependence.

"His policies over the past three and a half years bear that out," Kukowski said. "Under Obama we have increased our dependency on government with 47 million Americans on food stamps, record levels added to our debt and gutting work requirements for welfare. Instead of pro-growth policies, the Obama administration says they are relying on increased food stamps and unemployment to stimulate the economy."
