Its Hard To Stay Friends With A Digital Exercise Monitor

EARLIER this month, I found myself obsessing over a digital pet as demanding as the Tamagotchi toys I collected as a child. Those virtual creatures lived on the screens of egg-shaped key chains and needed constant feeding and petting, which was accomplished with the press of a button.
Leigh Guldig

My latest fixation wasnt an ersatz animal. It was the Nike FuelBand, a slim, black bracelet that has the mission of tracking the daily physical activity of anyone who wears it.

From the moment I wrapped the band around my wrist, I was enamored with the idea of a device that could help me collect data about my habits and behavior, so that I could try to improve them. The only trouble was that the device didnt seem to work very well.

The FuelBand, which awards virtual points for various forms of exercise, doled out rewards with little apparent rationale. One lazy Sunday, I lounged around my apartment with my iPad and an endless pot of coffee, barely moving. But the band delivered a cheery message: Id hit my goal for the day. Huh?

Others have noticed this inconsistency, too. Casey Chan, a writer at Gizmodo, found that the band awarded more points for eating a slice of pizza than for walking up a flight of stairs.

Joseph Teegardin, a Nike spokesman, said last week that the company assigned points to a range of behaviors. To tally those points, the accelerometers in the wristband monitor activity and match movement patterns to a Nike proprietary index. He added that the device worked best with activities involving wrist movement dancing and basketball, for example.

The devices inconsistency was frustrating. After a few days, though, I forgot about my newfound pet altogether, leaving it in a public restroom and then, after retrieving it, putting it in my back pocket and later accidentally sitting on it. Until then, the wristband had certainly been affecting my behavior. I felt Fuelshamed, embarrassed each time I glanced at the bands dull surface and found it illuminated by a lonely red dot, a signal that I wasnt active enough to appease the machine.

The FuelBand is part of a new, ambitious breed of fitness tracking devices and apps that promise to transform their owners into personal data collectors, able to analyze and improve the minutiae of their daily lives where they go, what they eat and how much they move.

These gadgets and software have attracted legions of fans who want to know how far they run on a jog or how many calories they burn on their way to work. The FuelBand, however, is trying to move into new territory by creating its own index for awarding points, called NikeFuel, based on a variety of activities and then calculating a daily total. Its meant to give its users a generic goal, but it can also lead to confusion, given the ambiguity of the metrics.

THE forgetfulness and guilt I experienced as my FuelBand honeymoon wore off is not uncommon, according to people who study behavioral science. The collected data is often interesting, but it is hard to analyze and use in a way that spurs change.

It doesnt trigger you to do anything habitually, said Michael Kim, who runs Kairos Labs, a Seattle-based company specializing in designing social software to influence behavior. Habits are based on cues that happen every day, which leads to a routine and then a reward or achievement, which could just be something as general as an endorphin rush.

Of the FuelBand, he said, You just see a pretty number that isnt always enough to be a trigger. The FuelBand connects with smartphones and a Web-based interface, which shows users a cute animation of a dancing alien as a reward for reaching a goal. But Mr. Kim, whose rsum includes a stint as director of Xbox Live, the online gaming system created by Microsoft, said the gamelike mechanisms of the Nike device and others like it were not enough for the average user. Points and badges do not lead to behavior change, he said.

The FuelBand and its counterparts also allow users to announce their achievements on various social networks. But frequent updates could annoy the friends who see them. Does anyone really want to see how many miles you ran, what you weigh, along with what the weather is where you are and the songs youre listening to? said B. J. Fogg, who directs the Persuasive Technology Lab at Stanford and has conducted research tests with the FuelBand and other forms of wearable technology.

But Mr. Fogg said he believed that the FuelBand might be useful in another way. Simply donning it can work as a fancier version of a string tied around your finger: a reminder to complete a task or errand, he said. It could be the nudge you need, for example, to get off the subway a few stops early and walk the rest of the way home, or to jog a few extra laps around the track.

You arent going to be any less active than you already are by wearing it, he said.

But its benefits, such as they are, may not be sustainable. The biggest problem people have is losing the device, Mr. Fogg said with a laugh. Is it reasonable to expect someone to wear it every day for the rest of their life?

It isnt for me. My once-beloved FuelBand now lives on a crowded dresser, surrounded by jewelry Ive grown tired of wearing.

Of course, these monitoring devices could be miniaturized further, and could develop more impressive capabilities. Steven Dean, who organizes gatherings in New York for self-trackers people who collect data about everything from their caffeine intake to their number of smiles said we were in the early stages of information gathering and analysis. He compared it to documenting a rash on his skin, photographing it and keeping a record of its response to various allergy creams.

I may not know what to make of the information Ive collected, but at least I have it, Mr. Dean said. I could show the dermatologist what I looked like two weeks ago rather than guess.

EVENTUALLY, wearable devices will help people understand more of their bodies behaviors and find ways to tweak them. Already, personal data streams can be exported to smartphones or computers for use in digital weight scales and heart and blood-sugar monitors. Future devices could nudge their owners in real time, letting them know if they were near a gym and hadnt worked out in a few days. Or they could warn diabetes patients to stay away from ice cream shops.

This is just the start in terms of pure data capture, Mr. Dean said.

Facebook for iPhone and iPad gains a new "save for later" feature

Facebook for iPhone and iPad gain new

Facebook has added a new feature to the Facebook for iPhone and iPad app that allows you to save posts for later. In reality, this works similar to what other services call "favorites". If you browse the Saved posts, you are able to scroll through them later as their own feed. You have to physically mark them as Unsave to remove them from the Saved folder.

To save a post. Simply hold your finger down on the post you want to save and a popup that says "Save" will appear. Just tap the popup and you're done!

To access your Saved folder, you must first scroll to the bottom of the sidebar menu and tap on Edit Favorites. Next, tap the + sign and select Saved from your list of Apps. Then tap Done. Now, you should see your Saved folder in the Favorites section of your sidebar menu!

All saved stories are private, so you don't have to worry about Sally being notified that you saved her relationship change to Single. You wouldn't want her to think you're some weird creepy stalker!

You do not need to download an update to receive this feature. You should simply see a notification informing you of the feature at the top of your news feed when you use the Facebook app on your iPhone (see above screenshot). I did not see the notification on my iPad, but the feature is indeed there.

Anyone planning to use this feature? Personally, I could care less about saving stories on Facebook; however, I do see its appeal. Parents can use it it to easily keep track of specific activities that their kids do on Facebook, and others can use use it to save their favorite photos and status updates of friends and family. What about you? How do you plan to use the new Saved feature?

Update: We've been able to verify, and The Verge has also confirmed, that Save is now available on Facebook.com as well.

Dick Cheney Speaks Truth to Palin

ABC News is offering a summary of former Vice President Dick Cheney's comments about the selection of Sarah Palin for the 2008 ticket:

"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."

"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?' "

Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.?

"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She ? attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test ... of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

Cheney's right.

The country will be better served if Mitt Romney chooses a running mate who is actually prepared to be president should it become necessary. It makes sense that a vice president who played so active a role in managing the response to a terrorist attack would find it galling that so many Republicans say that Palin is qualified for the same job.* Not that Palin's fans will see it that way.

The tea party-affiliated conservative pundit Lloyd Marcus has given voice to the inevitable backlash, e-mailing out a statement on Sunday night that said, in part, "To suggest that Sarah Palin does not possess the necessary qualifications to serve in the White House is ridiculous on its face. Ever since she was selected in 2008 by the Republican Party's nominee for president, then ratified by the GOP membership at the Republican Party convention, she has proven time and time again to be an extremely capable, inspiring, and visionary leader." Put another way, he's citing her success as a figurehead in the tea party as evidence that she was qualified to step in as president, serving as head of the executive branch and the United States military.

That's a silly argument.

What's sillier is the determination of many in the GOP to keep defending Sarah Palin. That's always been a fruitless enterprise, and it's a particularly quixotic one at this moment, for it's very difficult to see how raising her profile could help the GOP during the 2012 election cycle.

-----

*Whether the nation would have been better off on 9/11 had Sarah Palin been vice president instead of Dick Cheney is a fascinating counterfactual. On one hand, George W. Bush was out of his depth, Cheney had a great deal of experience, and he surely made contributions to American steadiness and security in the days immediately after the attacks. On the other hand, Cheney did more to advance disastrous policies during the Bush administration than anyone else, he brought David Addington into government, and he was among the most irresponsible people in the Bush administration when it came to the accuracy of his rhetoric about Iraq. All things considered, I have to say that Palin may well have been the better vice president. Sure, she would've been a disaster, in frivolous, obvious ways, but no one would have trusted her with real power (and as we all know, George W. Bush stayed alive through two terms).

A giant step in a miniature world: UZH researcher measures the electrical charge of nano particles

A giant step in a miniature world: UZH researcher measures the electrical charge of nano particles [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-Jul-2012

In order to observe the individual particles in a solution, Prof. Madhavi Krishnan and her co-workers entice each particle into an electrostatic trap. It works like this: between two glass plates the size of a chip, the researchers create thousands of round energy holes. The trick is that these holes have just a weak electrostatic charge. The scientists than add a drop of the solution to the plates, whereupon each particle falls into an energy hole and remains trapped there. But the particles do not remain motionless in their trap. Instead, molecules in the solution collide with them continuously, causing the particles to move in a circular motion. We measure these movements, and are then able to determine the charge of each individual particle, explains Prof. Madhavi Krishnan.

Put simply, particles with just a small charge make large circular movements in their traps, while those with a high charge move in small circles. This phenomenon can be compared to that of a light-weight ball which, when thrown, travels further than a heavy one. The US physicist Robert A. Millikan used a similar method 100 years ago in his oil drop experiment to determine the velocity of electrically charged oil drops. In 1923, he received the Nobel Prize in physics in recognition of his achievements. But he examined the drops in a vacuum, Prof. Krishnan explains. We on the other hand are examining nano particles in a solution which itself influences the properties of the particles.

Electrostatic charge of nano drugs packages

For all solutions manufactured industrially, the electrical charge of the nano particles contained therein is also of primary interest, because it is the electrical charge that allows a fluid solution to remain stable and not to develop a lumpy consistency. With our new method, we get a picture of the entire suspension along with all of the particles contained in it, emphasizes Prof. Madhavi Krishnan. A suspension is a fluid in which miniscule particles or drops are finely distributed, for example in milk, blood, various paints, cosmetics, vaccines and numerous pharmaceuticals. The charge of the particles plays a major role in this, the Zurich-based scientist tells us.

One example is the manufacture of medicines that have to be administered in precise doses over a longer period using drug-delivery systems. In this context, nano particles act as packages that transport the drugs to where they need to take effect. Very often, it is their electrical charge that allows them to pass through tissue and cell membranes in the body unobstructed and so to take effect. That's why it is so important to be able to measure their charge. So far most of the results obtained have been imprecise, the researcher tells us.

The new method allows us to even measure in real-time a change in the charge of a single entity, adds Prof. Madhavi Krishnan. This is particularly exciting for basic research and has never before been possible. This is because changes in charge play a role in all bodily reactions, whether in proteins, large molecules such as the DNA double helix, where genetic make-up is encoded, or cell organelles. We're examining how material works in the field of millionths of a millimeter.

Helpful Tips for Online Gaming ~ PC Pedia -| Blogger|Computer Tips,Tricks |Internet Tools |SEO|Tech |Reviews|Money Making
The online gaming world can be a very confusing world for any newcomer, but there are ways to do it right. The trouble with online gaming, is that the games are hard and the people you are playing with tend to be very critical when it seems like someone does not entirely know what they are doing. But, besides those worries, there are other things that online gamers need to consider when entering the realm of the online game. One of the most problematic things about online gaming, as with most of the rest of the internet world, is that a person can take on any identity that they wish, or could be completely anonymous, which opens a whole big can of worms when it comes to identity theft, internet safety and protection. It is very important for online gamers to be aware of the security threats that can come with their online game play, and therefore there are many precautions that an online gamer could, and should, take when playing their games. Online games are also very prone to computer hackers and others with malicious intentions. Sure, online games seem like they are all fun and games, but that may not always be the case.?
Here are some precautions that any and every online gamer should take when playing their games:

Be careful who you trust while online
This goes for any aspect of the internet, but is especially relevant to online gamers. It is easy to trust someone that you have played hours and hours of games with online, but you have to remember that it is not real life, and everyone is not as nice and trustworthy as they seem at first. Many people who get scammed via online games get scammed because they are too trustworthy with strangers that they meet through online games.

Look after your fellow gamers
Once you do find people that you trust in your online games, then it is important to build a bond and to look after each other. This should not be a problem, as most online games are team oriented in some way or another, so all you have to do is carry that into the realm of staying safe outside of the video game, and online.

Block someone, or kick them out if you do not feel comfortable
With online games, the player has all the control, so it is key that you utilize that control whenever you do not feel comfortable about something. There are many ways to block or kick someone off a game, and there is very little chance of repercussions from the person that you did it to.

How well does Skype keep secrets? VOIP service beats back more questions

By Bob Sullivan

Skype helps keep more secrets than any software on Earth, but just how safe are those secrets? That question arose again in earnest this week, after a set of stories claimed new Skype technologies made it easier for law enforcement to eavesdrop on members.

With 250 million users, Skype ?owned since 2011 by Microsoft -- might be considered the world's most widely distributed communication tool. Because its software encrypts those conversations, it is certainly the world's biggest deployment of encryption tools.? That's served the service well for years: It has a reputation for helping dissidents foment revolutions, and for being a last bastion of privacy.?

Governments, of course, hate secrets, and secret-keeping technologies that might enable what they identify as criminal behavior. Skype makes it possible to have phone calls that can't be wiretapped -- making the service a battleground in this perpetual privacy vs. order fight.

Since Skype first went corporate in 2005, with its purchase by eBay, that battleground has grown even more complicated.? A scrappy start-up can ignore the Chinese government and the FBI for a while; a Wall Street company with billions in revenue cannot.

Since that time, privacy advocates like Chris Soghoian have called on Skype to clearly spell out its secret-keeping technologies and provide assurance that it's not cutting deal with government agencies, enabling secret wiretaps or other intrusions.? In his view, Skype has been coy, and only answered in generalities.

"There are a lot of people who deep in their gut mistrust Skype," said, Soghoian, a fellow at the Washington, D.C., advocacy group Open Society Foundations, which says it promotes democracy around the world.

That mistrust set the stage for a flurry of reports this week suggesting that the service is no longer fully private. A flurry of bloggers -- noting the introduction of centralized "supernodes" by Skype that might provide a central point for eavesdropping, and a Microsoft patent describing a technological method for eavesdropping -- put two and two together and speculated that Skype's communications tools were no longer fully private.

In a rare step, Skype responded with a detailed rebuttal on its website.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," wrote Mark Gillett, the firm's chief development and operations officer, speaking generally about accusations that Skype is acting "against our users' interests."? He issued a point-by- response to many charge specifically leveled against Skype, saying that nothing about Skype's "posture and policies" with regard to law enforcement had changed.?

?Supernodes,? which route Skype traffic through central servers rather than allowing point-to-point connections, merely improve the flow of information around the service, Gillett said. What's more, they connect only addressing information -- actual phone calls don't flow through those servers, so they do not provide a convenient access point for wiretaps. That denial is clear and specific.

"Skype to Skype calls do not flow through our data centers and the 'supernodes' are not involved in passing media (audio or video) between Skype clients," Gillett wrote.

Moreover, he pointed out, they were first deployed back in 2010, well before Microsoft purchased Skype. ?

There are, of course, plenty of other ways that law enforcement could theoretically crack its way into Skype calls. There could be a backdoor built into the service. Skype could create and keep a spare set of encryption keys to unlock message at government requests.? As Soghoian suggests, Skype could even authorize encryption keys that would allow the government to impersonate a user, and then perform a so-called "man in the middle attack," with a government agent secretly inserted into the middle of a phone call, able to eavesdrop.

Answering a query from NBC News,?Skype executive Chaim Haas, said in an email that the firm does not save keys for government use.

"Encryption keys ... are not revealed to users or escrowed to third parties and are discarded when the session ends," said Hass, the service's senior vice president for technology, emerging media and digital strategy. "(The) use of credential-based identities and end-to-end encryption to make 'man-in-the-middle' attacks very unlikely," he added.

Skeptics like Soghoian still aren't satisfied, however. He says the volume of the conspiracy theories from the past week shows how much people are suspicious of Skype, even if supernodes are the wrong reason to doubt the company.

"Skype is always very careful how (it) phrases things," he said.? "If they say they haven't changed their intercept policy since Microsoft purchased the company, then the question to ask is, 'What was that policy before?' If you ask them, they won't give a straight answer."

Indeed, the answer Skype gives consistently to that question is this: "When a law enforcement entity follows the appropriate procedures, we respond where legally required and technically feasible."

It's that ?technically feasible? part which bother Soghoian.

"Why don't they just come out and say how their technology works?" he said. "The company is extremely evasive and we wouldn't accept that anywhere else. ... Think about this: What other security company is there where the company won't describe how it secures user data, but people still assume it's safe?"

It's those assumptions that bother Soghoian. People say things on Skype that they wouldn't say elsewhere because they assume the conversation is completely safe from prying eyes.? If it's not, there's a real hazard.

"There's a solid body of research which shows that when people think they are safe, they will engage in riskier activities," he said. "People use Skype because they think it's secure, but Skype has done nothing to clarify what it does and doesn't offer." He's concerned that Skype is, in a sense, having it both ways -- benefitting from offering a communications tool with a reputation for being completely safe from government's prying eyes, while benefitting from relationships with governments that help its business.

Other technology companies, like Google, provide what are called "transparency reports," which give some information about the number of times they have fulfilled requests from government agencies. Twitter released its first such report earlier this month. So far, Skype has not done so.

Still, a transparency report is not likely to answer the key question: How safe are secrets on Skype? By the time that answer arrives, it will likely be too late to be relevant.? It's a bit of a Catch-22.? The day that data gleaned from a Skype-based wiretap shows up in a criminal indictment or lawsuit -- which is often how these mysterious business practices are revealed -- is the day that government agencies will no longer be that interested in eavesdropping on Skype.

"If people hear that Skype is not secure, they won't use it for those private conversations, and they will be less interesting to law enforcement," Soghoian said.?

Such was the case with once-popular encryption email service called "Hushmail." In 2007, it was revealed that Hushmail had helped the Canadian government obtain as massive number of emails while it tried to prosecute alleged illegal steroid dealers. ?Hushmail then fell out of favor, and became a less interesting place for law enforcement, Soghoian said.

"Several agencies learned their lesson from Hushmail," he said.? "They blew their cover ... that won't happen again."

Heart Gallery helps unite kids with 'forever' families - Area Wide News

The Oregon County Division of Family and Social Services showcased children in need of families during the statewide Heart Gallery campaign. Professionally taken photos of children, in need of forever families, were put on display at the Glass Sword Cinema and Alton Florist.

Missouri's Heart Gallery project began in 2006. It is a unique way to shine a light on the children in foster care who are waiting for adoption. The portraits and fun descriptions of the children reveal their interests and individuality. The Heart Gallery has helped over 180 children in Missouri find their forever families. There are currently 1,400 children in Missouri that are in foster care, and in need of loving, stable homes.

Oregon County Caseworker, Jessica Campbell, and her supervisor, Denise Young, were on hand to tell The South Missourian News more about the traveling gallery that showcases children in need of adoption.

"This is our traveling Heart Gallery, so we move it from circuit to circuit," said Campbell.

Young added, "It was at the Glass Sword Cinema and then at the Alton Florist. It travels all over the state of Missouri. The kids are from across the state. There are a few that are in our area. These are just kids that are up for adoption and looking for families."

Along with the photos, a basket is placed for people interested in adopting one of the children, to leave their name and number.

"One of our case workers will call and talk to them and set up their license and training," said Young. Classes must be attended by those interested in adoption and those willing to become foster parents.

Young stated, "We are always looking for foster parents in our area. Even with adoption, they have to attend the foster parent training."

Campbell also added more about the requirements for those interested in getting involved, "After the foster parent training, we have specialized adoption classes they must follow up with. The first step is making the call to get on the registry, and we can get them set up." Campbell was able to remember two children in the area that have been adopted as a result of the Heart Gallery.

Sincerely wanting a loving home for the children, Young said, "We have a lot of kids out there that just need homes." "The Heart Gallery also reminds us that it is not just babies that are in need of forever homes, they are all ages," said Campbell.

The Missouri Heart Gallery is a joint effort between the Missouri Department of Social Services and the Adoption Exchange-Missouri Office. The Adoption Exchange was established in 1983 and has been assisting children with special needs be adopted. The Adoption Exchange program has helped more than 5,500 children find devoted families.

Anyone interested in becoming a foster parent or adoption can view and learn more about the Heart Gallery at moheartgallery.org. Campbell encouraged anyone who has questions about helping locally, to call (417) 778-7251 and learn more about adoption or foster parenting.

This Vision Of The Future Includes Eyeball-Embedded AR, Hackable Humans, And Gamified Everything

Screen shot 2012-07-27 at 11.36.08 AMIt's impossible to predict the future, but the idea that our technology will soon collide with our biological sense of vision continues to pop up in the world. Minority Report is the best fictional example, while Google Glass is obviously the closest real-world iteration of this type of collision to date. But a new video (below) posted by Sight Systems takes a stab at how this marriage of sight with technology could manifest itself in the coming years (or perhaps decades). The video depicts some kind of system in which the technology itself is embedded in your eyeball, meaning that tons of apps lead you through your day without any extra hardware at all. You see the main character, Patrick, work out on his floor, watch TV (on an entirely blank wall), get dressed using some type of virtual closet app, and use the Wingman app to help him through a date. As with any large shift in technology, this type of lifestyle will have its pros and its cons.

Bonaire will welcome a group of Wounded Warriors next month. The group will be scuba diving for rehabilitation and recreation from August 18-25, 2012. This is the seventh consecutive year that Bonaire will host a group of U.S. military veterans.

During this week, severely wounded soldiers and their significant others will travel to the island to complete the final step in the process of obtaining their dive certifications. Representatives of the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association?s (DEMA?s) Be A Diver Program, the North American office of Tourism Corporation Bonaire and the Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) will also be on-site in Bonaire. All accommodations and diving will be provided courtesy of Captain Don?s Habitat Bonaire. Each year, the people of Bonaire warmly welcome this group and show them not only the natural beauty and pristine waters of the island, but also the friendliness and genuine hospitality of the Bonairean people.

This year?s contingent of ten Wounded Warriors has suffered life-changing physical injuries received in combat while stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They and their partners will be kept busy with a variety of activities beginning with the completion of their PADI and HSA dive certifications, which will take place on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Once certified, they will continue diving throughout the week, both from the dock of Captain Don?s Habitat and via boat dives to Klein Bonaire and other famous Bonaire dive sites. The group will also enjoy sightseeing, shopping, dining, a beach BBQ and an authentic Texas-style BBQ. Communication: The importance of Honesty | Improve your life: a ...

When we first meet someone most of us tend to be pretty open about whom we are, our likes and dislikes, as well as our sexual preferences. After all, we have nothing to lose and can easily move on to another potential partner. I have observed over the years that couples tend to become less open and honest about their feelings, thoughts, or desires because of potential conflict or being judged by their partner. Over time they have more and more of an investment in the relationship and more and more to lose.

They eventually get into a pattern of being whom or what they think their partner wants them to be and hide who they really are. They are not intentionally deceiving their partner. They are, ?not wanting to hurt them? or ?avoiding a potential fight? or ?they won?t understand.? They take the path of less resistance. In fact, this attitude and belief places barriers to communication and intimacy. This is very destructive to the relationship and lays a foundation of false security and can be very manipulative (even if that is not the intention). Ultimately it is disrespectful of the partner and the relationship.

It can be very difficult to maintain vulnerability with a partner and risk being judged by someone who?s opinion of us is extremely valuable to us. But, in order for relationships to continue to grow and be healthy both partners need to take the more difficult path and stay open and honest even if we are certain our partner will react in a less than positive manner. Without the facts, you and your partner will be unable to explore differences and resolve conflicts. You just pretend.

When couples come for counseling, all the things that were unsaid, all the anger and resentment that grew over time shocks, surprises, hurts, and angers the partners. They find out all the things they never knew. It is far easier to deal with these issues as the surface than having them all dumped at one time.

My advice to couples is to stay honest and open and vulnerable. If your partner is to have a relationship with and love you, then make sure it is you they see and not some version of you that you are trying to project. Who you are is good enough whether your partner agrees with you or not.

Working Grandma's Time Management Challenge

?

?

Thoughts of working from home dance in their heads

?

When I first thought of working from home freedom was the first benefit that came to mind. As an aging baby-boomer I've learned there's more to it than meets the naked eye.

This week I'm traveling with my part time business to Orlando, Florida. Because of my schedule changing something had to give?writing an article full of value for you was one of those things.

My friend and fellow Inner Circle member, Stacy Stevens agreed to share her secrets to managing time when she came home from a full time career. Take note all you baby-boomers and stay at home grandmas and grandpas?this will rock your world?it did mine!

Working Grandma's Time Management Challenge

?It?s not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about?" ? ?Henry David Thoreau

When a busy grandma chooses to begin working from home, they think, ?Sweet! I will finally get to see my grand babies, spend time with them and really enjoy being a grandmother! Often, though, they feel busier than when they were working a J.O.B. 40 hours a week. The grandkids complained more that you're always working and never had time for them. It can be ?disappointing or discouraging at that point, ?because you never seem to have enough time to get your work projects done. How is this better than working for someone else!? Well, you should know that it COULD be better; you just have to figure out how.

?

I have been working from home for about 2 years now and have a wonderful (to say the least!) income and time to take my kids to and from school, help with their homework and spend quality time with them! I have it all and all it took was managing my time and responsibilities better. Here?s what I learned, and this is how you can apply it to help you enjoy those special kids in your life, whether they be kids or grandkids:

1. Create a list of actions for yourself AND your family for the day. I love to do this at the family dinner the night before. This allows me to make sure that everyone?s needs are considered. This action list will include: all my expectations of what I would like to accomplish for work the next day; the kid?s chores, play activities, sports and other activities; and the significant other?s plans for the day. Sounds like a lot, but it is no more than happens in my day without a plan. Seems better to get the schedule straight than wing it, be busy all day and get nothing done.

2. Have the family members assign the amount of time that they think each activity will take and who needs to participate.?By doing this I found out that my kids really wanted me to do things with them not just be there! Go figure! With times?allotted?to each activity, I could correlate the schedule so that my work activities corresponded to their independent activities. The bonus was that I also got much needed playtime breaks! Remember, however, that no matter how much fun you are having, when the next activity is scheduled to begin, you need to stop playing and get back to work! It took practice to coordinate the schedules and make sure that everyone was doing their assigned tasks, but it was worth it! I was finally able to reap the rewards of the business opportunity that I had undertaken and the rewards of staying at home with the family!

3. Follow the schedule.?As I mentioned above, no matter how much fun you are having, work still needs to be done. This will help teach your children and grandchildren responsibility, self-control and best of all time management skills! If you know that you a certain amount of time to complete an undesirable task, then it doesn?t seem too overwhelming. There is an end to the misery! That applied to my work as well. Equally as beneficial is the fact that I know I get to play! That it won?t be all, ?wait a minute?, ?hold on? or ?I will be there right after I?? anymore. I will get to enjoy the opportunity to be WITH my kids and grandkids.

The biggest struggles in the beginning were deciding how long each activity should take, thinking of everything to put on the schedule and coordinating it so that there were not alarms going off for every different person at different time throughout the day! Speaking of alarms, I am sure that there are many programs out there that would do the same thing, but I use Microsoft Outlook. I can put in each persons schedule and have a different song segment plan for each new activity so we automatically know what the next activity is and who it is for when the alarm goes off. By the way, our family dances to the music during transition. Only the bold can have that much fun!!

Be bold, dance, have fun and love that family that you chose to take this new business adventure for!

Music Profile On line | Memory Map

In the in an identical way music forms have evolved now to some other non-physical method called the net and so have the distribution/playback methods from live, to radio airwaves, to record shops. With the total amount of people you are able to achieve in seconds global, the internet is one of many quickest methods as a musician. So what is all this online business about, to maintain your fanclub fascinated at all times? The prefix of all web site tackle, internet, stands for Web, a graphic interface for the Internet like Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Safari, etc. Available 24hrs per day, 7 days weekly, a global supply of data (like sharing music and film), connection between websites, today?s shopping site, checking the traffic to and from your own site and the best network knowledge for pleasure and work. Costs are low, it is academic (always something to master), distribution is in volume and the internet makes searching straightforward a perfect promotional tool, review competitors, rapid messages of technology. So you can create an online presence all that?s needed is really a computer, modem, internet account, related computer software and hardware, a website or house online. Requirements to add on your internet site is an ?about me? biography, add top quality media addressing your abilities as an or female singer or drummer and how to make contact for relevant musicians jobs (essential ).Whatever media you are placing on the internet, you do need to make sure that you?ve the best structure. The most used models currently are MP3 (Napster uses this), MPEG (Quicktime) and AAC (Apple?s iTunes and iPod). Press involves anything such as artwork, noise, movie, cartoon, midi documents, CD-Rom and Laser Disk Control, text, digital truth detectors, communications and some form of hypertext database control. All media forms have a certain structure they were and are made in. For example, in the last times music was recorded onto vinyl ? a big, circular disc but easily damaged, which needs a record player for it to be heard. All platforms require a system to play or view the work produced. By 1988, record organizations and their suppliers had persuaded consumers that CD-Rom was by far superior by exceeding LP revenue. The CD-Rom is really a more convenient, smaller circular disk with remarkable audio noise, called variable track-juggling, lasting format, electronic processing and many improved playback equipment and their music collection appropriately. This shift has driven leaders towards a non-physical structure, which record businesses have only later accepted particularly with the late release of the electronic download graph. The MP3, formally called the MPEG Audio Layer-3, has brought the industry by surprise, as you keep 150 of songs on a blank CD-Rom or as an alternative insert 15,0000 songs onto an iPod or lightweight media player. There are two methods of providing media on-line ? (how to in other words uploading your music! ):Embedding: This website is hosted with a service company which will be paid according to the period and measurement of the website expected. The site has been built by a developer/yourself who has coding (like HTML and meta-tags) to make the site stay, which will be available to the general public. An administration site is supplied by the service provider at the backend for the web site to be published. Most of the media is inserted in the internet site, for example an MP3 player where the tracks are sitting in a database, in order that when the play button is clicked the web attaches to the database and plays the track.Linking: Whereas here you?ve an organization who offers room to musicians for them profile their music and photo?s. It is based on a free subscription when they provide an user-friendly program to publish your substance. There?s a restriction on the format, size and number of forms of media you can publish, so be ready for this. You can see and check your account when you?ve transferred your material. The media you give is stored on their server, in order soon because the site is released the media links directly to the file to play the media back. An example of such a web site is MySpace and the Arctic Monkeys used this online shipping device which forced them to number 1 in the graphs being an unsigned band. For your online crowd, to view or perform your media there are three methods to get this:Download: iTunes is really a common example of how they?ve revolutionized the way people interprets and buys music. iTunes offers an online music store where the customer can select which tracks to buy from the enormous selection and acquire to the PC/Mac or iPod. The tracks are saved as.AAC files (Advanced Audio Coding), MP3 quality is replaced by a digital format, which, however is appropriate for particular portable equipment, in this instance the iPod. All you should do is send your credit/debit cards facts on line and anytime you fancy a new tune, just click the appropriate option and the music sends the document to your required equipment.Stream: Napster is a subscription service where you lease the music by paying a monthly payment. You pay A10pm for streaming to your PC/Mac or A15pm to stream it to your MP3 player (the sole portable equipment), which provides you a permit to the Digital Rights Management to perform these trails. If you do not pay, the songs become outdated and it?s all nicely managed with an accreditation key. Loading basically means hearing the monitor direct from the origin across a bandwidth. As Broadband and related types of connectivity are more advanced, the way could be well directed by streaming very, as the way is almost in real-time.Progressive Download: This is actually the mixture of streaming and downloading. As you go through the file it begins to play the track or movie in real-time begins to download the track to your designated source and 15 seconds later. The BBC have an on line store of all their advertising, from music to TV to radio, named IMP (Interactive Media Player) which they offer to all their consumers. It includes an outstanding characteristic, it provides individual a handy remote control to maneuver back and forth in time, so you can accomplish a TV programme for instance from the 80?s or you can decide on a programme because of be found only in two months time. All advertising the BBC produce is now developed in the format for their on line store library for all of it?s consumers to have immediate access at only a mere click. There are always boundaries which engineering people, before next creation is discovered. Until then, for the supply of accessing, you?ll require a machine to keep your media ? depending on the volume of media you have may also depend on the expense of your internet site. Streaming is slightly different because it offers with bandwidth upstream (you provide the media online), and downstream (you?re provided with the media online). Home customers are restricted when compared with more advertising can be transferred far by large companies, which faster nonetheless it does cost them five times more compared to typical home Broadband connection.Remember:* Copyright your music works, check out the symbols used for publishing/copyright. When you have recorded your advertising, often register it with the appropriate connection to trademark your works or deliver it to yourself recorded delivery and do not open it when it arrives ? this might save yourself you a whole lot of money in the long run.* Keep it slick and professional remove spam or comments from your friends expressing what they did on the weekend.
